Meet the Department Staff

  • We are thrilled to introduce to you our incredible programming staff for the 2014 season at CTN! With many returning staff members and a handful of department heads new to our camp family, we can’t wait to welcome everyone to camp this summer! Without further adieu, we introduce to you….

    Program Director – Edana Appel
edanaHi Tel Noar Family!  My name is Edana Appel and I am so excited to spend my first summer at Camp with you all as the Program Director. I am originally from El Paso, Texas, but I have lived all over the US and Israel. Just like many of you, I have spent every summer starting in 1994 at camp or in Israel, and I can’t wait for another.  I graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in Near Eastern and Judaic studies and Women’s and Gender studies with a minor in Hebrew Language and Literature from Brandeis University. Since graduating, I worked as the assistant director at two different Jewish overnight camps, Camp Young Judaea –West and Camp Livingston, and last summer I worked at Camp Interlaken JCC as the Judaics Director. Currently, I am in the Heller/Hornstein Program at Brandeis earning an MBA in Nonprofit Management and a MA in Jewish Professional Leadership.

I have learned in my years that camp is best place in the world, there is never a wrong time to eat ice cream and nothing beats a great Teva sandal tan! I am proud to have one visit to CTN under my belt, and looking forward to spending the summer months there very soon!

Can’t wait to meet you all this summer, its going to be a blast!

Special Events Coordinator – Caroline Dorn
Hi! I’m Caroline Dorn and I am so excited to be spending my 11th summer on the shores of Sunset Lake. I am a rising carolinesenior at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, studying Spanish, sociology, and studio art. This summer I will be working to develop evening activities at camp, to make sure that every great day at CTN ends with a great evening program! I am so excited to be working in this new position and to be part of an incredible staff. I am also thrilled to be spending the first portion of my summer in Jerusalem interning and exploring an amazing city with the first ever Cohen Camp Dor L’ Dor College Style Program. I know my trip to Israel is going to enhance the work I do at camp this summer, and I will definitely be bringing a taste of Jerusalem back to New Hampshire with me in June.

In my free time, I enjoy painting, swimming, and wearing animal costumes. I am president of Muhlenberg’s Hillel and I am involved with the Muhlenberg Theatre Association as a member of a performance ensemble. While I am very busy during the school year, I have been eagerly awaiting summer since I left CTN last August and I can’t wait to get back to my summer home!

Director of Pre-Camper Care – Kayla Morris
kaylaHi everyone! My name is Kayla, and this will be my first summer at Camp Tel Noar. Although new to CTN, I have spent (yikes!) over 25 years of my life in various roles at various camps. This summer, I will be facilitating a program for the youngest group of children at camp, those who are part of the Tel Noar family, but too young to live in a cabin as a full time camper. I can’t wait to take on this new role, and I look forward to working with such a wonderful group of people!

During the year, I live in Brookline, MA with my husband, Adam, my one year old daughter, Zoe, and my spunky Cockapoo, Gus. I spend the “off season” playing a variety of roles. I am primarily mom, but I also work as a tutor for middle and high school students. Additionally, I work part time for an au pair company as a liaison between the host families and their au pairs. Needless to say, I keep busy! When I do have some free time, I love spending time with my family. We enjoy being outdoors, checking out new restaurants, and we try and travel as often as we can. See you all soon!

Head of Tennis – James Shapiro
Hi everyone, I’m proud to be your 2014 Head of Tennis this summer. I’m graduating Queens College (CUNY) this May with a double major in Sociology and Media Studies (communication). I’m a USPTA ranked Professional coach with 10 & Under certification and currently studying for my National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Personal Trainer certification before I head up for camp. I plan on placing my footprint in tennis this summer by making tennis something fun for everyone. A lot of programs that I’ve worked with have had their focus on performance and a lack of creativity and personality. My hope is that everyone at camp will enjoy tennis, regardless of their skill level.

Interesting fact about me…I do enjoy long walks on the beach. On my down time I enjoy watching classic films and some of my favorite TV series include 24, The Walking Dead, Castle, Family Guy, The Simpsons, and Veep. I’ve also been diagnosed as a gym-rat. It’s a big part of my life. From boxing to yoga, I’m a fan of all kinds of exercise and training methods, just don’t get me started on crossfit. Some of my favorite sport teams include the New York Mets, New York Giants, and L.A. Clippers. Last of all, I hope I can try out all the activity areas in camp during the free time I get because I love trying new things!

Camp Tel Noar 2013Head of Jewish Life & Learning – Marley Weiner
I can’t wait to be back this summer! I’m Marley Weiner and I’m tremendously excited to be joining the Tel Noar staff for a second year as the head of Jewish Life and Learning!  At camp, I’m responsible for all things Jewish, from Jewish Education to leading services to coordinating Tischa B’Av. I’m also the staff Goodman Educator, and am responsible for helping our staff bring Israel education to every aspect of camp. The hardest part of my year has been the absence of the Shabbat Israeli dancing that we do at camp!

During the year,  I’m beginning beginning my third year as a student at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. I’m very excited to be spending next school year at the Conservative Yeshiva in Jerusalem. When I’m not studying Bible and Talmud, I like to dance, read science fiction novels, and throw dinner parties for my friends.

jaymeHead of Waterfront – Jayme Daniels
Hi!  I’m so excited to be spending my summer at Camp Tel Noar as the Waterfront Director! While this will be my first summer at CTN, it will be my 12th summer with the Cohen Camps.  I spent 11 summers at Camp Pembroke as a camper, CA (CAT), and counselor.  At Pembroke I was a lifeguard on the pool staff and also spent much of my time on the waterfront during my 4 years as a counselor.

Since receiving my Masters in Teaching from Simmons College, I have been teaching as an eighth grade math teacher at North Andover Middle School for three years. I’m looking forward to applying my enthusiasm and passion for kids in the classroom to the shores of Sunset Lake.  In my free time I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, running, and spinning. I am most looking forward to experiencing the tight-knit community that I have heard so much about and sharing my love for camp with all of you! Can’t wait for the summer to begin!!

janieHead of the Pool – Janie Borozny
Hi my name is Janie Borozny and I am from Westbury, NY. I have been married to my husband John for almost 20 years and we have 3 kids, Kayla who is 14, Samantha who is 12 and Alexander who is 11. This summer will be my four summer at Camp Tel Noar and I can’t wait to get back to the pool! I love working with the campers, counselors and spend my days overseeing the swim lessons and pool activities. I am a certified swim instructor and lifeguard instructor and also teach and train the future lifeguards of CTN (our oldest campers who sign up for Lifeguarding class). I am a swim instructor all year long and I teach kids as young as 3 and adults as old as 90 making what I do incredibly rewarding. Outside of summer camp, my family and I enjoy camping. We’ve traveled all along the east coast in our RV…we love the outdoors! The kids and I also enjoy baking together and making chocolates. What I am looking forward to this summer is meeting new people, getting to know the people I already know better and having a great summer.

Head of Media – Jared Fujii
My name is Jared Fujii, and this is my fourth year at Tel Noar.  I’m a Southern California transplant to Boston, where I movedJKF to attend college (Brandeis and Boston Universities).  During the school year I work at Galvin Middle School in Wakefield as a special education paraprofessional.  During the summer, though, I’m the head of the Tel Noar Media department, as well as the yearbook director.  I spent the last three summers as a bunk counselor and member of the Arts and Crafts staff, as well as doing the yearbook.  This year’s book is the ninth I’ve been involved in over my career.  I’m looking forward to the new challenges and opportunities that the newly consolidated Media department will offer at camp this summer!

TanyaHead of Rikud – Tanya Kurt
Hi! My name is Tanya and I am 23 years old. I recently moved back home to the seaside town of Bournemouth, which is in England. I work for a charity called Rethink Mental Illness, and am really interested in pursuing a career in Clinical Psychology. I graduated from university last year, where I studied Psychology and Psychological Practice. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at university and participated in many extracurricular activities, including a Zumba dance class. I love dancing and from a young age I took classes in Ballet, Modern, Tap and Jazz. At camp I will be the Dance Activity Coordinator, and in this role I hope to ensure that all those participating in Dance activities have an amazing time. I am really looking forward to meeting everyone at Camp and experiencing a summer to never forget!

Head of Athletics – Anthony Renton
Hi everyone, my name is Anthony Renton and I’m currently in my third year at Leeds Metropolitan University studying Events AnthonyManagement. I come from North West London and I have four siblings, one older brother and three sisters. In 2011-2012, I was voted to be the Leeds Jewish Society’s Events officer, and I enjoyed an amazing time creating events for all Jewish students on campus.

I was so excited when I was told I was offered my role on Camp as I have heard amazing things about the atmosphere at Camp Tel Noar and having spoken to past counselors at Camp, they all had an amazing time. I’m really looking forward to creating connections with all the kids on camp, learning new things from everyone, creating new friendships and of course being part of the athletic department.

My biggest hobby is soccer and I’m a proud Middlesbrough supporter. Middlesbrough Football Club may not be the best team in the world but it’s always been exciting (and sometimes painful) following them! I love playing 5 a side football and I have a team in the student Jewish league at university. I also enjoy watching Formula 1 and Darts. The only thing which I enjoy more than soccer is playing with my 2 year old niece who tells me what to do whenever I see her!

With my passion for sports together with my love for leading children’s summer programs, I am thoroughly looking forward to this new and exciting adventure this summer!

saraHead of Arts & Crafts – Sara Haskin
Hi Camp Tel Noar! I’ Sara and I am currently a middle school art teacher at Rj Grey Jr High in Acton, MA.  Much of my life has revolved around camp and art. I spent 13 years as a camper and counselor at Camp Yavneh.  I love to create all sorts of art as well as experiment in new creative ways. I did my undergrad at the University of Vermont and her masters at the University of Wisconsin in Art Education. This summer I’ll be joining the CTN family with my two boys, Jonah and Phin. They can’t wait to meet all of you.

I am really excited to be coming back to the camping world to help campersshare in my love of creating!

Head of Shira – Ben Harris
Hey everyone! I’m Ben and I am going to be the new Head of Shira this summer! When I’m not at camp, I can be seen running

benaround Boston wearing many different hats. Originally from Atlanta, GA, I am a rising senior at Boston University majoring in Vocal Performance and minoring in Jewish Studies – all in hopes of one day becoming a Cantor! I also work at a Brookline synagogue as the Music Educator and Youth Group Advisor, working with kids K-12.

In my free time, I LOVE to cook and bake – some people think it’s a lot of work (which it definitely is), but it’s so much fun! Also, I play guitar, piano, and many other instruments! I am really excited for camp to start and I’m looking forward to meeting everyone!
